Scooters have been around for almost two centuries. They
were invented in 1826 by a man named Baron Karl von Drais
de Sauerburn
Scooters weren't a very popular way to get around until
the Great Depression when the Little Rascals and Our Gang
movies came out. The children aftering watching the movies
would then make their own scooters out of wooden crates. It
was a cheap mode of transportation.
The scooter is enjoying a resurgence in popularity. Not
just among children, but "grown-up" kids as well. The
elderly discovered the scooter as an excellent way to get
around. College students embrace the scooter to scoot
around campus. The scooter continue to grow as an
alternative form of transportation in large crowded cities.
Today's scooter is much sleeker and trimmer then the
depression era model. They are easier to steer and some
models come equipped with either a gas or electric motor.
Some scooter designs enable them to perform tricks.
As the scooter continues its rebirth, so do scooter related
accidents.
One reason for scooter accidents are the small wheels and
wobbly design. The second reason is riders fault. Like
bikes and roller blades, people don't wear the protective
gear.
Scooters are mostly built for speed making the scooter
itself smaller and more light weight. But because it is
smaller, it's easier for the rider to loose their balance
riding over uneven ground or cracks.
Avoid cheaply made scooters. Many have sharp edges and
flimsy folding mechanisms that collapse under pressure.
Choose a well built scooter that matches your child's
weight, personal development and motor skills. Several
safety organization don't recommend a scooter for children
under eight years old.
If you want to protect yourself from serious injuries, wear
the protective gear. The pads will protect you from getting
your knee ripped open or cracking open your skull and dying.
Buying the right scooter for you and your child can help
prevent injuries, while still having fun riding your new
scooter.
