Suggestions for a Vacation Getaway

Think you've got to be a health buff in order to enjoy
so-called adventure vacations? Well, it's just not true.
Anyone can have a great time on an adventurous holiday
getaway--just pick the one that's right for you. You'll
find that nothing beats a vacation from the extraordinary!
Yes, there are some pretty challenging adventure holidays
to choose from: skiing or rock climbing, for example. But
if you're not a sports buff, never fear. What about an
adventure of a different sort? Try visiting an exotic
foreign country, somewhere that's off the beaten path.
Opt for a smaller inn rather than a huge posh resort.
After all, "adventure" doesn't just imply a physically
demanding activity--it can also be about challenging
yourself psychologically and emotionally, and learning
about yourself in the process.
So just like you would when thinking about any holiday, the
first step is to decide what you want from the experience.
There are adventures to be had at all ages, but clearly you
would not want to take your young children on an Everest
expedition. Some older folk might appreciate a slightly
more relaxed trip - others might not!
So what's right for you? Well, start by asking yourself
what it is that you've always wanted to do. Is your dream
to ride a horse bareback on the beach? Then contact a
tour company that will help set you up at an ocean-side
villa where you can rent horses and learn to ride. The
instructors will help you from the start, so there's no
reason to hesitate if you've never ridden a horse before.
Challenging yourself with new activities isn't the only
way to have an adventurous holiday. What about visiting
a far-off destination that not many people get to see?
The Australian outback or the Great Wall of China--these
are exotic locations we've all heard of but few of us
actually get to see.
Get in touch with a tour company that will do all the
planning for you and make sure you are safe as you explore.
Or, if you prefer, simply get a couple of guide books and
hit the internet--there are lots of great deals to be found
when you plan your own vacation!
What if you're not sure exactly where to go? The options
are endless. Many places that were unsafe for travelers
in the past are now prime destinations again, such as
beautiful Ethiopia, which is peaceful again after a long
civil war. Or consider steamy Chile, culturally-rich
Jordan or stunning Nepal.
If you want both psychological and physical stimulation,
simply combine an adventurous destination with an active
vacation. Try exploring the destination of your choice
by foot--this works particular well when the outdoor
climate is appealing, as in Madeira, the Garden Island.
You won't want to be burdened by tents and other baggage
during the day, so consider becoming part of an organized
tour, which will take care of your luggage while you are
enjoying the culture and scenery.
If an active holiday is what you are looking for, there are
always alternatives close to home that may make an
adventure holiday quite affordable. There are people who
have completed the 2,174 miles of the Appalachian Trail by
stringing together several adventure holidays. There is no
shortage of breaks offering a chance to learn an altogether
new skill - kayaking, mountain biking, rock climbing...
Whether you choose to go on an adventure holiday with the
emphasis on physical activity or one that is more about
mental exploration, you should try to get into shape for
it. This includes being physically fit (particularly for
the more demanding holidays, but also for the sightseeing,
which can be tough), and getting your brain in gear by
doing some reading beforehand.
These things will help you get the best from your adventure
holiday.
