The pride of America is its U.S. monuments. They celebrate
the history of America and give glory to its countrymen.
The Jefferson Memorial is on of the most elegant monuments
in America. Freedom is symbolized by the Lincoln Memorial.
The Liberty Bell proclaims freedom and liberty throughout
all the land.
A visit to Hawaii would not be complete with visiting the
Arizona Memorial. It is a solemn and sobering experience
even for those who were not alive on December 7, 1941.
1177 men lost their lives that day when Pearl Harbor was
viciously attacked by the Japanese which propelled the
United States into World War II.
The Statue of Liberty is one of the most universal symbols
of political freedom and democracy. Located in New York, at
151 feet tall, the Statue of Liberty symbolizes freedom
throughout the world. Its formal name is Liberty
Enlightening the World. The Statue was actually a gift from
the people of France. The statue, made of copper sheets with
an iron framework, depicts a woman escaping the chains of
tyranny, which lie at her feet. Her right hand holds aloft a
burning torch that represents liberty. Her left hand holds a
tablet inscribed with the date July 4, 1776, the day the
United States declared its independence from England.
Near the Statue of Liberty is Ellis Island located in New
York Harbor. The island once served as an immigration
station and temporary shelter for people immigrating to the
US. The main building is a museum dedicated to the history
of Ellis Island Immigration Station.
Arlington National Cemetery contains veterans from all the
nation's wars, from the American Revolution through the
Persian Gulf War, as well as presidents, chief justices, and
astronauts. Some of the more popular sites in Arlington
National Cemetery include the Tomb of the Unknowns and the
grave of former President John Fitzgerald Kennedy.
In honor of Thomas Jefferson the Jefferson Memorial was
built. The memorial pays dedication to Jefferson's
achievements of being the first Secretary of State, the
third President of the United States and author of the
Declaration of Independence. The structure of the memorial
is based on the classic style of architecture introduced
into this country. A statue of Jefferson standing is
located in the center. Four inscriptions are written on
the inside of the walls which depicts his beliefs in
freedom, education of all people, the need for change in the
laws and institutions of a democracy.
The Washington Monument located in Washington, DC stands
tall and towers over everything. It is the tallest masonry
structure in the world. Fifty flags surround the base of
the memorial with each flag symbolizing each of the fifty
states of the Union.
Between the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial is
the Reflecting Pool. This pool is 2000 feet long, 160 feet
wide and holds 7 million gallons of water. The pool was
designed to minimize wind ripples and sharpen the watery
image of the Washington Monument.
The 16t president of the United States, Abraham Lincoln, is
honored with the Lincoln Memorial. The building represents
the Union and inside the building is a seated statue of
Lincoln facing the Washington Monument and the Capital.
The Tomb of the Unknowns stands on top of a hill facing east
toward Washington, DC. It was constructed to mark the grave
of an unidentified American soldier from World War I.
