Technically the longest day of the year ushers in the summer
season. No wonder, summer is associated with those long,
warm days when you enjoy outdoor activities of all sorts
like swimming and picnics, not to mention lounging in a
hammock reading those books that you dreamt of reading all
winter.

Summer is a time of the year that seems to improve moods.
This is especially true for people who suffer from mood
disorders associated with the long dark days of winter.
Scientists have linked this mood disorder to hours of day-
light, and researchers believe that the increased levels
of Vitamin D that people get from the sun during the summer
also plays a part in improving mood during the summer.

The layman's explanation for the mood swings in summer is
simply because it's a season that's associated with fun and
leisure. It's holiday time. Or, so it was till recent years.
In many countries in the world, almost all industries and
even towns shut down during the month of August. This is
because the heat is just too much for people to work in
buildings without air conditioning.

It is important to stay back at homes because of the fact
that summers are the season when one is prone to dehydration
and heat strokes. They are very serious problems about which
people should take care. It is advisable to consume a lot of
water while indulging in the outdoor activities to keep the
body and its temperature cool. Water is the best solution to
avoid these problems.

What should you do with this conflicting information?
Practice moderation. Getting a little sun and a light tan
shouldn't be a problem, but it isn't a good idea to get a
heavy tan. Just use a mild sunscreen and you should
be fine. Take special care of children during the summer,
though, to be sure their delicate skin is protected and
doesn't get sunburned and that they, too, get plenty of
fluids to protect them from dehydration. Remember they're
smaller, so it takes a much shorter time for them to be-
come dehydrated during the summer. You may want to restrict
their time outdoors during the summer to the morning and
early evening hours to decrease their risk of both too much
exposure to the sun and to the heat.
