The Europe Experience

The attraction of Europe as a tourist destination lies in
its beautiful scenery and rich history. There is so much to
see and so much to do in Europe. You will understand the
Europe experience only after you've been through it, for no
one can do justice in trying to describe the finer details
of the food, drink, sites, or scenery that is so typically
European. And one of the most inexpensive and fulfilling
ways to enjoy Europe is to backpack through it.
Backpacking through Europe is becoming quite the tradition,
especially for young students. Not only do students from
Europe itself backpack the continent, but also youth from
North America and Australia are enjoying the opportunity to
see the sites and enjoy some time on this continent. Youth
are usually welcomed, and there are many places to stay.
In the larger cities most of the people speak English, and
are generally friendly and willing to help. If you know a
little bit of the language in one or more of the countries
you are staying in, Europeans appreciate it when you at
least give the language a try.
When packing for your backpacking trip through Europe,
remember to bring along some essential items like
comfortable and sturdy hiking shoes and of course, a
backpack. These are very important items even though you may
not be hiking continuously, and would be hopping on a train
from time to time. Do not pack more than three or four sets
of clothes. The more clothing you pack, the more stuff you
will have to lug around.
However, many people make the mistake of thinking that
they need a lot of clothing. This is not the case. Three or
four sets of clothing are more than enough. Wool socks
will help wick the sweat away from your feet and prevent
the unpleasantness associated with 'swamp foot'. Some food
stuffs and cooking gear is helpful, as is a small tent if
you plan to sleep out of doors some nights. Travel guides
will help you plan out what you would like to do, and a
good map is invaluable. Make sure you have plenty of water.
When backpacking through Europe, make the most of youth
hostels. Youth hostels are European traditions. They allow
young people to stay at very low rates. If you have a
special card, you can receive discounts for staying at many
hostels. This is very helpful, as you will stay quite a bit
on your journey through Europe. But, apart from the monetary
benefits, there is a lot you will gain through these
hostels. For instance, you will meet fellow travelers and
enjoy camaraderie. You'll make new friends who might give
you good advice for the rest of your travels.
